5 Tips for Decorating Your Garden

5 Tips for Decorating Your Garden

Ornaments, wind spinners, wind chimes, lights, and more: Beautiful outdoor décor adds color, texture, and even sound to your landscape, giving it year-round appeal. Here are five easy ways to decorate your garden.

Add a Water Feature

One of the fastest, easiest ways to create a sense of ambience is to add a water feature to your garden. Decorating with fountains and bird baths makes sense – small, easy to maintain, and scaled for average-sized landscapes, these simple water features make charming focal points. If you choose a fountain, you’ll enjoy the sound of trickling water, and you’ll attract more birds.

Decorate to Scale

The more room you have to play with, the bigger the objects you can place in your landscape. The good news is that even larger items like wind spinners come in smaller sizes; for example, shorter versions with clamps for attaching to deck railings let you enjoy kinetic artwork even when your outdoor living space is limited.

Cluster Items in Odd-Numbered Groups

When decorating your garden, keep this old interior decorator’s trick in mind: items placed in odd-numbered groups look more appealing to the eye, particularly when they are clustered in groups of three or five items. Choose objects or plants in different sizes so that you can create a layered look. One of the best ways to make outdoor décor pop is to place the largest item in back, with the middle one slightly ahead of it or alongside it. Position the smallest item in the foreground, where it won’t be lost. You can also place items next to one another: Play with the look to see what appeals to you most!

Add a Touch of Whimsy

One of the best things about decorating a garden? It’s fun! Whimsical artwork, whether in neutral tones or fanciful colors, lends personality to your space and puts a smile on your face. You don’t have to go all out – even one fanciful item will make a difference.

Got a Wall? Add Art!

Outdoor décor doesn’t have to be confined to areas where plants grow. If you have a wall or even a privacy fence, dress it up! With beautiful plants at the base and outdoor art hanging in a prominent position, a boring wall is transformed into a stunning focal point.
