5 Ways to Get Your Garden Ready for Summer

To our team here at Happy Gardens, summer means long days and lemonade. We believe that summer is pretty much perfect the way it is… but that a few gorgeous garden decor products and a couple DIY outdoor projects could make this sweltering season that much sweeter.

  1. Deck Out Your Patio With Wall Decor
  2. Install Lights For Less Than You Think
  3. Splurge—or Save!—on Patio Furniture
  4.  Try Gardening With Almost-Effortless Basil
  5. Splurge on a Pool—or a Bird Bath!

While summer doesn’t technically begin until late June, we start celebrating—and decorating!—on Memorial Day.

Here are five great ways to get your garden ready for summer:

1. Deck Out Your Patio With Wall Decor

Patios are nice year-round, but they really shine in summer, when it can often be too hot and too humid in full sun. If you’ve got a patio or deck, get it summer-ready with unique wall decor.

You can find one-of-a-kind signs, license plates and clocks at vintage stores, flea markets or garage sales. Or you can opt for something new but just as unique by browsing our handcrafted selection of wall decor.

For summer in particular, we love bug-inspired decor. Check out this hanging dragonfly or this hanging butterfly for inspiration.

2. Install Lights For Less Than You Think

Lighting is a great, inexpensive way to add depth and character to your yard, especially in summer, when twilight seems to last forever.

From LED lanterns and solar-powered patio lights to fancy, flush-mounted light fixtures, there are a thousand different ways to warm up your patio and lawn.

There’s also some brilliant DIY projects that make beautiful lighting so much more affordable. From Bluetooth syncing to the “magic light trick”, you don’t need to hire an electrician or pull permits to brighten up your backyard.

3. Splurge—or Save!—on Patio Furniture

Happy Gardens - Patio Furniture

Patio furniture is a must-have for outdoor spaces big and small. If you live in a little studio apartment, even the tiniest of balconies can benefit from a cute folding chair and a tiny flower box. And if you live in a home with a large yard, you may want several different outdoor seating areas for you and your guests.

Thankfully, furniture has gotten a lot easier (and cheaper!) to buy over the last decade. If you wanted to spend less 10 years ago, you either drove to IKEA or searched craigslist for used treasures. Now, you can choose between IKEA and craigslist and hundreds of awesome online stores selling gorgeous, unique furniture at reasonable prices.

Pro tip: Wait until Memorial Day to buy your furniture, when many online retailers will offer special incentives and discounts.

4. Try Gardening With Almost-Effortless Basil

At Happy Gardens, we understand that not every one of our customers has a green thumb. While we are all united by our love of the great outdoors, gardening is not for everybody. But, regardless of your gardening skills, we believe that summer is a great time for every person to try to grow just one thing.

And for beginners, we recommend starting with a simple pot of basil. You can buy it anywhere, from a nursery to your local grocery store. It loves water and partial sun—about six hours a day, to be exact. If it looks wilty, offer more water. If it looks dry, give it more shade. Trim it from time to time, paying special attention to the little flower blossoms that begin to sprout.

This intuitive and inexpensive plant will help you become a better gardener while brightening up your caprese salads all summer long.

5. Splurge on a Pool—or a Bird Bath!

Many homeowners dream of adding a pool to their backyard, only to balk at the $30,000+ price tag. But a bird bath will only set you back a hundred or so bucks. Treat your neighborhood’s feathered friends to a spa day, and enjoy their cheerful chirps, splishes and splashes for summers to come.
