The Story Behind Our Stone
It Takes a Village
Rocks are everywhere. But the stones that go into our whimsical stone sculptures are extra-special. It’s not because of their composition; in fact, they’re simple river stones. What makes our stones stand out is the artistry that goes into each sculpture, as well as the people behind those sculptures, and companies that make a difference in peoples’ lives.
At Happy Gardens, we believe in supporting companies that give back to the people behind their success. When you purchase a stone sculpture, we’re able to re-order from the Honduran manufacturing firm that keeps us supplied. In turn, part of the manufacturer’s proceeds go toward making life better for the artisans who create our stone garden décor. Technical training, marketing, and design are a few important areas in which funds from the sale of stone sculptures help Honduran artisans thrive in a tough economy. During the high season, when wholesale buyers like Happy Gardens see more activity and reorder more frequently, the manufacturer is able to offer enough sculpting work to support approximately 400 artisans. There are about 130 artisans employed with the company year-round.
Thanks to our supplier’s socially conscious enterprise model, part of its profits go toward furthering social and environmental goals. In addition to providing employment, the company gives back to the community. Its first efforts began in 1998 as a response to Hurricane Mitch, and since then, the local community has benefitted in a number of essential ways. Part of the proceeds from the manufacturer’s stone sculpture sales go toward:
• Providing basic sanitation and potable water
• Constructing new workshops and improves existing buildings
• Providing equipment and materials to artisansTraining artisans
• Assisting artisans with production and marketing at national and international levels
Besides aiding with basic sanitation needs and helping to assure a stable income for families living in rural and marginal areas, part of the company’s proceeds go toward providing humanitarian aid on an ongoing basis. Examples include counseling, nutrition, and basic health essentials for children, youth, and elders at risk.
The manufacturer’s success helps with education, too, through tutoring programs and mentoring aimed at improving the general quality of life. The company’s vision is aimed at creating self-sufficient, self-reliant, integrated families actively participating in the economy in a socially positive way. Though Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere, its artisans creatively combine their love of nature with a warm, gentle sense of humor, crafting beautiful folk art that brings simplicity and contemporary design together.
How Your Purchase Helps
Re-orders from companies like ours help the manufacturer with its ongoing support of these artisans, giving them jobs in their local communities, close to tight-knit, multigenerational families. We love knowing that part of the proceeds from our bulk purchase of stone sculptures from this company go toward this great cause, helping to keep local communities vibrant and sustainable. We appreciate these nature-inspired designs for their ability to add so much warmth and character to homes and gardens while representing a far-reaching effort to improve the quality of life for people who live in an area with few opportunities – and we know you’ll love them, too.
